Mike Ricketts - Huit Clos/Planning Line
Created for Foreground’s 2012 project Notes from Nowhere, Mike Ricketts’ Huis Clos/Planning Line, was a poster declaring the legend “Hell is Other People” in bright orange script.
The poster was distributed to the public in Frome. The public were asked to erect it in public view – in a street facing window, on a noticeboard or in public space in some way. Over 350 posters were distributed to the public in 3 hours on one day alone and hundreds were flyposted and erected on buildings and in windows throughout the town.
At the bottom of the poster a phone number is printed in bold white text. There is no information on the poster to let the public know what the phone number relates to but an implicit relationship is created between the statement on the poster and the number. Does the phone number provide an explanation or justification for the boldly negative statement? Or suggest a situation in which the statement is particularly true?
Supplied in a set of 10 identical posters to allow you to either flypost or wallpaper the poster or distribute them in the spirit of Ricketts' original project.
